Communications - Government Affairs

The Ohio Statehouse

Overview

The Office of Communications is responsible for facilitating communication between the Mayor's Administration and government organizations, including: federal, state, and local government agencies; the Ohio General Assembly; state officeholders (including Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General, Auditor, Secretary of State, and Treasurer); and the United States Congress.

Government Liaison / Support Role

As the chief elected official of the City of Canton, the Mayor (or his designee) acts as the city's primary representative when interacting with government agencies.  The role of the Office of Communications is to support the communication needs of the Mayor and his staff throughout this process.  This may take the form of official letters, presentations, information packets, research, or a variety of other similar functions.

National Organizations

United States Conference of MayorsThe Office of Communications also maintains a constant relationship with the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM), a national, non-partisan organization representing the interests of all mayors from cities with more than 30,000 residents.

The USCM contributes to the development of national urban policy through its membership, which participate in the process through a number of standing committees.  Mayors from across the country also share ideas with one another to let other cities know what has worked for them in the past.  For more information about the United States Conference of Mayors, click here.
