Healy picks local attorney for top administration post

Minor Smith will handle discrimination and other legal issues for new Mayor

CANTON, Ohio – Mayor-elect William J. Healy II announced Thursday that he has appointed Canton attorney Corey Minor Smith as his Legal Compliance Director.  The appointment is a newly created cabinet-level position in the Mayor's office that will handle all discrimination, equal opportunity, and related legal tasks.

“Corey is the perfect example of the kind of person we need to keep in this city,” Healy said.  “As a young, bright, successful attorney, she has chosen to stay in the area and give back to her community.  I'm thrilled to have her on my staff, and look forward to using her skills for the betterment of Canton.”

Before being appointed, Minor Smith was appointed by the late Honorable Robert Horowitz as an Assistant Prosecutor in the Stark County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, Juvenile Division.  She also served as a Judicial Attorney for the Summit County Court of Common Pleas.  Most recently, she established her own law practice in downtown Canton.  She will continue to represent clients on a very limited basis.

Part of Minor Smith's duties will include serving as the administration's Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Compliance Officer, a position mandated by law to oversee all claims of employment and workplace discrimination.  Healy said that he wanted to elevate the role of the compliance officer from that of past administrations to show his commitment to non-discrimination and fair treatment in the workplace.  The position will also be responsible for Fair Housing, ethics, and other related legal issues.

“I always want someone with Corey's legal background to be in the room with me and my cabinet members when we are making employment-related decisions,” Healy said.  “The easiest way to do that was to make the position part of my cabinet, so that's what we did.”

Minor Smith said that she hopes to use her legal background and her relationships within the community to ensure that the Mayor's administration follows both the letter and the spirit of the law as it relates to claims of discrimination.

“This is an exciting opportunity to serve the people,” Minor Smith said.  “Ensuring that there is always an open door for those who feel they have been discriminated against is a critical function of city government.  I'm honored to have been given this important responsibility.”

The appointment was effective January 2.
