Executive Order 2009-008
Fair Employment Practices

WHEREAS, the City of Canton is committed to providing an orderly workplace and ensuring the civil rights of all City employees; and

WHEREAS, the City of Canton is committed to maintaining a work environment free from unlawful discrimination, unequal treatment and/or intimidation based on age, ancestry, color, disability, gender, national origin, race, religion and/or sexual orientation.  In keeping with this commitment, the City of Canton does not tolerate any unlawful discriminatory, unequal and/or intimidating act(s) or practices based upon age, ancestry, color, disability, gender, national origin, race, religion and/or sexual orientation including, but not limited to displays, remarks and/or derogatory comments from City employees toward fellow employees or citizens; and

WHEREAS, the City of Canton as a public entity will provide maximum leadership in encouraging the principles of inclusion and equal treatment; and

WHEREAS, as the Chief Executive Officer of Canton, Ohio, the Mayor is charged with the ultimate responsibility of supervising and directing the day-day affairs of City Departments and Offices as prescribed by the Ohio Revised Code and Codified Ordinances of the City of Canton; and

NOW, THEREFORE, I, William J. Healy, II, Mayor of the City of Canton, under the authority conferred by the State of Ohio, hereby order that no City of Canton employee shall commit any acts including, but not limited to racial slurs, innuendos, derogatory remarks and/or displays presented in any form toward fellow employees and/or citizens.

BE IT FURTHER ORDERED that any reports or complaints of unlawful discriminatory/intimidating acts or practices shall be reported pursuant to Collective Bargaining Agreements and/or directly to the Office of Compliance.  If an investigation results in probable cause that discriminatory or intimidating acts or practices occurred, corrective or disciplinary action up to and including termination will be taken, as appropriate.

BE IT FURTHER ORDERED, that each Department Head and Elected Official shall be responsible for ensuring that his/her employees are aware of the contents of this Executive Order and the Fair Employment Practices process available through the Office of Compliance.
