City of Canton
Health and Safety Policy

Section 1.      The City of Canton is committed to providing a healthy and safe workplace for its employees. Accident prevention shall be considered of primary importance in all phases of operation and administration. The City shall establish and insist upon safe practices at all times by all employees, contractors, subcontractors and visitors. The City of Canton recognizes its responsibilities to protect all persons from environmental health and safety hazards when they are at City facilities.

Section 2.     The City of Canton is committed to avoiding accidents whenever possible.  The City is also committed to providing immediate care if an injury occurs and return injured employees to work as soon possible.  Therefore, if an injury is sustained, it must be reported to a supervisor immediately.   If medical attention is required, it is the supervisor’s responsibility to ensure that the employee is transported to a medical facility.  When possible, the City shall provide work that is within the limitations set by medical professionals.

(a)    Administration Responsibility
  
The Mayor, Director of Public Service, Director of Public Safety and the Department of Human Resources shall work with Department Heads, Supervisors and Union Leadership to develop policies, provide educational resources, schedule safety meetings, and address safety concerns.

(b)    Department Head and Supervisor Responsibility  

i.    To make the safety of employees an integral part of their regular management function and shall supply employees with the necessary personal protective equipment.

ii.    To report any and all work conditions that may be unsafe and act accordingly.  

iii.    To thoroughly investigate incidents and to document findings. 

(c)    Employee Responsibility

i.    To properly and thoroughly train and use safe work practices. 

ii. To ask a qualified person for assistance if at any time an employee is ever in doubt about how to do a job/task safely.

iii. Employees shall assist their co-workers as needed.   

iv. To accept and follow established safety regulations and procedures.  

iv.    To know that any violation of, or disregard of, safety rules or safety practices; carelessness, endangering the life or safety of another person shall subject the employee to disciplinary action according to City Wide Work Rules. 

v.    To assist management in accident prevention activities. 

vi.    To report unsafe conditions immediately. 

vii.    To use personal protective equipment.

Section 4.     Safety is everyone’s responsibility.  A safety policy, when properly implemented and followed, can be very effective in preventing accidents and injury.  The effectiveness of the City’s program can only be established with everyone’s compliance.  This written policy shall be reviewed annually with all employees.
