Police Department - Training Academy
Captain Jack Angelo, Division Commander

Lieutenant Greg Boudreaux, Bureau Commander

The Training Bureau helps the Canton Police Department maintain the highest degree of professional policing for the Department.  By administering ongoing training, screening new recruit applicants, and facilitating OPOTA-certified training sessions for officers, the Training Division ensures that Canton police officers are a cut above the rest.

Some of the functions of the Training Division include:

  • New Recruit Orientation
  • New Recruit Physical Agility Testing
  • K-9 Operations
  • BAC Datamaster testing (in conjunction with Ohio Department of Health)

Required Training

Police Officers in Canton are required to undergo forty hours of in-service training each year.  This training includes mandated state certification requirements in firearms duty (handgun and shotgun).  In 2014, this included Glock and Straight-baton re-certification, OUAD training, Hood Drill Training, Simulator Glock training, Autism Awareness, Religious Diversity Awareness, Computer Training, CPR/AED Certification, and OVI/ADAP/In-Car Video Training.
