MAYOR WILLIAM J. HEALY, II

Mayor William J. Healy II – 61^st Mayor of the City of Canton

Integrity – Loyalty – Commitment - Innovation. Mayor William J. Healy II believes those words will help “MOVE CANTON FORWARD,” by targeting and improving the economy, neighborhood revitalization, education, and public safety. Born and raised in Canton Mayor Healy became the 61^st Mayor of the city in 2008. He has consistently committed himself to the improvement of the city. Since taking office, Mayor Healy has worked with over 400 companies in an effort to keep jobs in Canton despite the national economy.

Economic Vitality

Tirelessly creating opportunities for companies like: Medline, Chesapeake Oil, and the Cleveland Cavaliers, is only part of the Mayor’s commitment to revitalize and improve the city. In addition, companies that are pillars of the community like Aultman Hospital, The Akron Canton Airport, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame have reinvested millions of dollars to aid in the resurrection of Canton. Gervasi Winery is only one example of the Mayor’s intent to create green space, improve the city of Canton, and create jobs. Since taking office, the unemployment rate has dropped to 8% because of Mayor Healy’s innovated practices leading to the creation of thousands of jobs for the citizens of Canton. The city is also the first in Ohio to pass and implement a Project Labor Agreement providing a preference to local companies choosing to bid on city projects; thereby, utilizing local workers and contributing to the decrease in the unemployment rate.

Strengthening Neighborhoods

The Mayor has made a commitment to Canton residents to lead the way in community revitalization and improvement of neighborhoods. Tearing down 500 dilapidated buildings and replacing them with green space and new buildings is just one part of rebuilding the city. Mayor Healy will create a comprehensive plan by 2013 to guide future development of the city’s neighborhoods. Funding for neighborhood projects has tripled since the Mayor took office. This commitment proves the Mayor’s loyalty to residents encouraging them to start improving, rebuilding, and taking pride in their neighborhoods.

The City’s Foundation: Education

Perhaps most critical to the city is the foundation of education. Mayor Healy believes a strong educational system will lead not only to student success, but will also lead to greater community involvement, commitment, and a strengthened economy. That is why the Mayor collaborated with the city’s educational leadership to improve the city’s educational foundation. In addition, the Mayor created the Mayor’s Scholarship Program. More than 14 area universities such as: Malone University, Kent State Stark, Akron University, and Miami University also believe in the scholarships and provide funding for the scholarship program. This increases a Canton high school students’ opportunity of securing financial aid for college.

Zero Tolerance: Improving Public Safety

Mayor Healy and the Canton Police Department realize that in order to have a safer community there needs to be a community-based approach to fighting crime. New programs and policies have been implemented such as the anti-gang initiative “Community Initiative to Reduce Violence” and the “Zero Tolerance” policy, both of which are using new approaches to crime prevention. Placing cameras in high-crime areas, citizen outreach, an improved alert system, emails, texting and Twitter have led to a 30% decrease in crime which is the lowest crime rate in over a decade. The lower crime rate creates a safer, improved neighborhood fostering loyalty and pride among Canton residents.

Mayor Healy’s Loyalty to Canton

Mayor William J. Healy II, was born and raised in Canton, Ohio and is the son of the late William J. Healy, former Democratic city councilman and State Representative. Mayor Healy graduated in 1981 from McKinley High School and pursued and received an Associate’s degree from the Stark campus of Kent State University. Committed to education, the Mayor attended Rowan University in New Jersey receiving a Bachelor’s degree in science. He also received a Master of Business Administration from the prestigious NYU Stern School of Business.

Returning from his education, he became a small business owner and in 2004 decided to run for the 52^nd District of the Ohio House of Representatives. He won the elect and was re-elected in 2006 making him the representative of the city of Canton and parts of Stark County. In 2007, realizing the city faced numerous challenges including: a crumbling economy, a high unemployment rate, neighborhoods in need of attention, a high crime rate, and a poor high graduation rate, Healy ran for Mayor of Canton and won. He was re-elected in 2011 and has repeatedly proven his loyalty and commitment to innovated approaches to improving the City of Canton. Mayor Healy and his administration have paved the way for several vital improvements in Canton; however, he knows there is much more work that needs to be done and is committed to Canton residents.

Mayor Healy serves on numerous boards and commissions including: the Kent State Stark Advisory Board, President of the Canton City Health Board, the Stark Development Board, and is the second President of the Ohio Municipal League Board of Trustees. The Mayor lives in Canton with his wife, Dee and son, Austin.
