Civil Service Commission
Who is the Civil Service Commission?
The Canton Civil Service Commission is the primary contact point for candidates seeking employment with the City of Canton, including the Board of Health and the Board of Education. Discover careers in IT, finance, engineering, labor, clerical work, health, safety and so much more! The Civil Service Commission oversees the Civil Service Department. The Department is operated by Director, Rachel A. Forchione. The Civil Service Department is responsible for recruiting, advertising, application management, administering tests, and establishing applicant eligibility lists for the majority of all bargaining and non-bargaining positions within the City of Canton. Nearly all employees within Canton city government got their start by taking a test administered by the Canton Civil Service Commission.
What are the duties of the Civil Service Commission?
The Commission prescribes, amends, and enforces rules for the classification of positions in the civil service of the city, city school district, and city health district. The rules apply to appointments, promotions, removals, transfers, layoffs, suspensions, reductions, and reinstatements of all the above positions. The Commission also creates and enforces rules to ensure the standardization of these positions and maintain efficiency in them. To learn about the official Civil Service Rules click here.
Mission Statement
The Canton Civil Service Commission provides strategies and actions for effective recruiting and testing, and when necessary, objective, neutral, and fair personnel decisions. Our policies are founded upon the principles of equal pay for equal work, equal opportunity, ability-based employment and promotion, and freedom from political influence. Civil Service strives to make the City of Canton the employer of choice for career success.
