Executive Order 2009-005
Firearm Destruction
WHEREAS, the destruction of firearms is deemed to be in the best interest of the safety, health and welfare of the citizens of the City of Canton; and
WHEREAS, as the Chief Executive Officer of Canton, Ohio, the Mayor is charged with the ultimate responsibility of supervising and directing the day-day affairs of City Departments and Offices as prescribed by the Ohio Revised Code and Codified Ordinances of the City of Canton; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, William J. Healy, II, Mayor of the City of Canton, under the authority conferred by the State of Ohio, hereby order the immediate destruction of all firearms that have been lost, abandoned, stolen, lawfully seized or forfeited, which are in the custody of the City of Canton Police Department, and for which there is no continuing need to retain for evidence for pending or open investigations or cases, or other administrative or judicial proceedings, and on which all procedures under the Ohio Revised Code Section have been completed, and which are not otherwise needed for law enforcement purposes.
BE IT FURTHER ORDERED that the City of Canton Police Department shall conduct all destruction of firearms under the terms and conditions prescribed by law.
BE IT FURTHER ORDERED that upon completion of the destruction of these firearms, the Chief of Police shall present a written report to the Director of Public Safety listing the weapons so destroyed, the date destroyed and the means of destruction. The Chief of Police shall implement destruction procedures as s/he deems necessary to ensure the proper destruction and accountability for the destruction of said weapons.
