The Juvenile Bureau was traditionally charged with investigating crimes committed by juveniles/minors. Recently the role of the Juvenile Bureau has expanded to handle many non-criminal matters, referred to as status offenses, including run away juveniles, curfew violations, and truancy issues as well as non-delinquent juvenile matters such as child neglect and/or child abuse.
For juveniles, the police role is considered especially important, because a young person's views and attitudes toward law enforcement are shaped by their first encounter with a police officer. Investigators assigned to the Juvenile Bureau also work closely with members of other community service departments and organizations to bring aid to youth in crisis.
